Prelude

My students will perhaps not notice, or perhaps they will, that at various times I teach in “themes”, that is, that I have something particular on my mind in regard to piano playing and music making besides the ordinary Generally Good Advice. These themes usually come from my own studies and work at the piano, which is unceasing and remains an obsession though teaching takes up the lion’s share of my time. As Casals apocryphally said when asked why he still practiced many hours a day in his 90s, “I think I’m making progress.” I think I am too, however slowly.

I will endeavor to write some of these down for the benefit of anyone who may wander into this corner of the internet, as I have time and inspiration. If you perhaps have a question, feel free to write to me or comment and hopefully I’ll get around to giving my version of an answer someday. Till the next time, happy practicing.
